THUNDER BAY - An alcohol-fueled incident at a Cornwall Street residence led to a woman being sent to the hospital after another woman struck her with a shovel.

The bizarre altercation, and series of violent events that came before it, began just after 4 a.m. Sunday.

When Thunder Bay Police Service officers arrived they found a woman on the ground with a laceration to her head. Those officers learned that an altercation began inside the apartment, which led a 36-year-old woman being assaulted by a 33-year-old man.

The man believed to be responsible for that assault left the apartment building. he then threw a beer bottle at the building, breaking a window.

That action led to two men, and a 24-year-old woman, to exit the building and confront the man. The confrontation led to a struggle and one of the men was bitten by the 33-year-old man.

A second woman exited the building and struck the 24-year-old woman over the head with a shovel. The woman struck by the shovel was taken to the hospital, where she now remains.

As a result of these incidents, police have charged Leanne Potson, 28, with aggravated assault. She has since made a courtroom appearance where she was remanded.
