THUNDER BAY -- The Ministry of Labour is investigating a workplace incident at the local Resolute Forest Products pulp and paper mill that sent a worker to hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Friday, sending a 29-year-old man to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where he remains in critical condition.
Xavier Van Chau, spokesman for Resolute Forest Products, confirmed there was a “major health and safety incident” at the Neebing Avenue plant last week.
“An employee was working in the finishing area of the paper mill and was pinned down by some of the machinery and equipment,” Van Chau told CKPR Radio.
The Ministry of Labour issued a requirement to hold the scene, which remained in effect Monday afternoon.
Van Chau said there were no reported incidents at the company’s pulp and paper mill, sawmill and woodland operations through the first six months of the year.
The company was fined $55,000 last week for a 2012 incident at their Fort Frances plant where a worker suffered a crush wrist and arm after assisting in moving stack roll for a paper machine when it moved.
The investigation is ongoing.
