Landry to challenge Harding in Shuniah reeve race

Shuniah Reeve Maria Harding will have company on the Oct. 27 municipal ballot.

Shuniah Reeve Maria Harding will have company on the Oct. 27 municipal ballot.

Four-year council veteran Wendy Landry said Thursday it’s time for new blood, announcing her candidacy for the Northwestern Ontario community’s top elected position.

“I bring a wealth of successful business experience along with passion for community development,” Landry said in a campaign release.

“I believe the people of Shuniah deserve a boost of positive, new energy and more diverse experience to contribute to economic development and to bring this unique community together. I have a proven track record, I am a community builder.”

Landry spent 20 years in corrections and taught at Confederation College. She’s now the manager of municipal and Aboriginal affairs at Union Gas.

Harding has held the position of reeve for the past 26 years.

She defeated Peter Tighe in 2010, capturing 56.7 per cent of the vote.
