THUNDER BAY -- Police are investigating suspicious overnight fires at a residence on the city’s south side.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to calls of a vehicle and garage fire in the 1700 block of East Victoria Avenue early Monday morning, and alerted the Thunder Bay Police Service that they were suspicious in nature.
Robert Campbell, the homeowner, was shocked by the two separate fires.
“I’m devastated,” Campbell said. “I can’t believe living on a busy street like this that something wide open like that could happen.”
Campbell said he was awoken by a bang shortly after 1 a.m. and found his pickup truck engulfed in flames.
He then noticed his backyard garage was also on fire.
The truck, which was parked at the front of the driveway, was completely destroyed by the blaze. Meanwhile, the garage at the back of the property suffered extensive exterior damage.
Police continued to hold the scene, with Campbell saying he was told the crime scene unit would be coming to conduct an investigation later in the day.
“I don’t believe it’s random,” he said.
He said both fire and police officials have told him they believe it was arson.
