THUNDER BAY -- A woman charged with assault in connection with a homicide investigation has been released on bail.

Becky Mamakwa, 21, was charged with aggravated assault after the alleged robbery and assault of 52-year-old Christopher Adams on July 1 outside of city hall on the corner of Donald and May Streets.

Carl Spencer Rae, 31, was also charged with aggravated assault in the incident.

Mamakwa appeared in bail court on Friday at the Thunder Bay Courthouse and was released on recognizance with two sureties in the amount of $1,000 each.

A condition of her release is that Mamakwa has to reside with family in Deer Lake First Nation and cannot attend the city of Thunder Bay unless for court or a medical emergency.

The alleged assault became a homicide investigation when Adams died on July 8 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Mamakwa’s next court date is Sept. 26 when Rae is also scheduled to appear.

Rae remains in custody.

Police have not yet said when or if the charges will be upgraded.

None of the allegations against Mamakwa or Rae have been proven in court.
