Meet the candidates: Ed Hailio

THUNDER BAY -- Ed Hailio doesn’t have much trust in government.

But instead of washing his hands of the institution, he’s decided he’d rather try to fix the problem from the inside.

Hailio is one of 19 candidates in the hunt for five at-large positions in the Oct. 27 municipal election and says he hopes to help the city find new direction over the next four years.

“Government, absolutely, imperatively have to change,” Hailio said. “I want the truth out about government. That’s why I’m here.”

Politicians may change, but the issues always stay the same, he said.

Electing the same lot of politicians over and over again is a recipe for repeating the same mistakes over and over again, Hailio said.

“They’re always the same old things,” he said. “You want jobs, you want this, you want that, better things for the people. But how can you get that when you’re dealing with something you don’t understand, which is government again?”

When it comes to issues at hand, Hailio says he’s dead-set against the city’s proposal to build a $109-million event centre, which he calls a colossal waste of taxpayer dollars.

There are far better things for the public purse to be opened for, and far too many people struggling from paycheque to paycheque to be worried about building another hockey rink.

“No, it’s a waste of money and it’s in a terrible location,” he said, criticizing the city’s preferred downtown north core location.

“The park down there is basically an embarrassment,” he added about the revamped Marina Park.
