Meet the Candidates: Frank Armiento

A lack of transparency at city hall and increasing taxes are just a couple of reasons Frank Armiento is running for council.

A lack of transparency at city hall and increasing taxes are just a couple of reasons Frank Armiento is running for council.

Now running for his second time in Northwood, with another attempt in Westfort on his political resume, Armiento has spent the last eight years in front of council as a concerned citizen.

Attending public input sessions, making deputations and suggesting solutions, Armiento said more people need to head to council chambers to do the same.

"Most people are afraid to go there," the retired contractor and financial planner said. "If you see how they treat the people that come to council. I wish there would be more people that come but there seems to be nobody that comes forward and I feel that I have a duty to go."

Recently denied a deputation on the sale of Municipal Golf Course, Armiento said it's just one example of the lack of transparency he sees at city hall.

"It's a big secret now. Proposals are not being made public we don't know all the details of the sale."

Taxes continue to increase and they don't need to, he added.

"The projections are really scary over the next ten years."

Armiento said an example is the Enhanced Infrastructure Renewal Program that he thinks is unnecessary.

"I think we can eliminate that tax by using our federal gas tax money properly," he said.

The event centre seems to be the main issue in this election, something Armiento is opposed to for one reason.

"I do not see anywhere in the Build Canada fund where we qualify," he said.

It's upsetting to think that the city could be spending millions on a report that might sit on the shelf he said.

But there are plenty of other issues he sees for the city, including crime, poverty and housing, which the city needs to focus on.
