THUNDER BAY -- Despite recent warm weather, the city is getting cold-weather ready.

City of Thunder Bay crews were out on the streets Friday trying to minimize the damage before the temperature dips again. A high of 4C Friday might mean relief for those itching to get outside, but it could mean headaches for drivers when all that melted snow freezes.

City plows were out on the streets and sidewalks Friday pushing the melting snow and water into gutters.

"We want to get that water off the road, that's the concern," city roads manager Brad Adams said.

That water can get into cracks in the road, eventually causing potholes when it turns back into ice.

"It hopefully minimizes the number of potholes will get from this melt period," Adams said.

While temperatures of 4C aren’t expected to last long, the forecast is relatively mild for january. According to Environment Canada, a high of -5C is expected Saturday, with Sunday and Monday featuring highs of -9C and -6C respectively.
