One person dead, another in hospital after collision between Terrace Bay and Marathon

A serious motor-vehicle collision between Marathon and Terrace Bay has has killed one person and sent another to hospital in serious condition.

A serious motor-vehicle collision between Marathon and Terrace Bay has has killed one person and sent another to hospital in serious condition. 

Ontario Provincial Police say the collision between a tractor-trailer and a van occurred halfway between the two communities on Highway 17. The Trans Canada was initially closed in both directions, but one lane has since been opened to alternating traffic. 

The OPP said the van had British Columbia license plates and was eastbound at the time of the collision. The van caught fire after the crash.

The male driver has been taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with what are described as major injuries. A passenger was found dead in the van.

The driver of the westbound tractor-trailer was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
