A public beach in Sioux Lookout remains closed off following the discovery of a petroleum-like substance on the lake next to the community.

The mysterious residue was first detected last Friday by a member of the public.

Officials investigated earlier this week, and spotted the oily sheen on top of the water.

As a result, the Northwestern Health Unit closed off the beach completely.

Since then, Sioux Lookout town officials have been working with the Ministry of Environment to run tests on what the substance could be.

The MOE says it is suspected to be fuel.

Mayor Doug Lawrance adds that the problem is downstream from the town's drinking water source, and therefore poses no threat.
