THUNDER BAY -- Don't be alarmed if you see a controlled fire or two around town this week.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue kicked off Fire Prevention Week at the Thunder Centre on Saturday with real demonstrations to teach practical skills.
Outside of Home Depot, shoppers handled fire extinguishers on flames. For some, it was the first time they'd used the devices, despite having them in their homes or workplaces.
Children rode in fire trucks and pamphlets were handed out for those who are still contravening the law by not having a carbon monoxide detector in their homes.
"If you can prevent the fire, everybody's safe, right? So that's everything from smoke alarms, carbon monoxide, safe cooking, escape plans," said fire inspector Kevin Anderson.
Anderson said public education activities would continue throughout next week.
