THUNDER BAY -- With the deadline a few months away, the city is still looking into whether it should try to hos the 2021 Canada Games.
City administration has been looking at whether to make a bid for the games, which would coincide with the 40 th anniversary of the last time Thunder Bay played host, since November. City officials recently attended a meeting in Toronto with around 25 other Ontario cities.
The bidding process opened Wednesday.
Coun. Larry Hebert said overall he thinks the city is in a good position to host the games, which could cost up to $20 million. Those costs are offset by available provincial and federal grants. While the city would be on the hook should there be a loss, Hebert said the last several host cities have made between $1 million and $3 million.
Hebert thinks the city's biggest hurdles would be finding 2,000 metres for water events and adding a second 10-metre platform at the Canada Games Complex for synchronized diving events.
"Those are some of the issues we'll have a challenge with or need infrastructure for," he said.
"I think we're in a good positon but we have to make sure we have the money."
The deadline to send a letter of intent to bid is May 20.
