The province will invest $6 million to expand and renovate a south side elementary school.

Alongside representatives from the Lakehead Public Schools board, Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro announced Friday funding details for Kingsway Park Public School.

The funding will be used to add four additional classrooms, three care rooms and an expansion of the gymnasium at Kingsway Park to accommodate the amalgamation of students from the Hyde Park Public School closure.

Lakehead Public Schools’ superintendent of business David Wright said the merger is part of the school boards renewal plan.

“Lakehead Public schools will be moving to a (Kindergarten to Grade 8) model,” Wright said.

“Moving forward our program department decided the K-to-8 model is the best model for our students to eliminate transitions.”

During an interview Wright said once the board receives official word from the government they will begin scouting for consultants and contractors for the operation.
He believes construction will begin next spring and have the school complete for September 2017.

Wright explained that there were three parts to the Boards renewal plan brought to trustees in February.

“We have an accommodation review taking place on the South side of the city and an accommodation review on the North side,” Wright said.

“We are in the process of asking communities to provide us feedback on the options we have presented.”

Wright added the Board is looking to amalgamate three elementary schools and two secondary schools on the North side as well as two elementary schools and two high schools on the South side.
