Postal workers to Stamp Out Hunger

THUNDER BAY -- Postal workers are used to going door-to-door.

However on Saturday, instead of leaving stacks of birthday cards or unwanted bills in Thunder Bay mailboxes, they’ll be looking to take things away – food to be exact.

They’re asking residents throughout the city to leave a collection of non-perishable goods at the curb or on their porch, which will be collected and handed over to the Regional Food Distribution Agency and then distributed to food banks throughout Northwestern Ontario.

Robbyn Stajkowski, public-relations co-ordinator for Stamp Out for Hunger, said they’re looking for a wide variety of food during their annual drive.

“Pretty much anything you’re willing to donate, from canned goods and baby food to Kraft Dinner and beans and port,” Stajkowski said.
It’s just one way postal workers can give back to the community they serve, she added.

“The people of Thunder Bay, everybody goes through hard times at some point, whether you’re out of a job, you had a short paycheque that week or maybe you’re living on the streets or a student,” Stajkowski said.

“We’ve all been hard on our luck and needed a little bit of help every now and again.”

To donate, Stajkowski said residents can gather their non-perishable food into a waterproof container and leave it outside where a postal worker will be by to pick it up.

To more easily identify goods for pick-up, she recommended either attaching a bright green flyer delivered to most people’s doors this week, or taping an RFDA sign to the parcel.

Food can also be dropped off at participating grocery stores or at the post office itself.
