(ATIKOKAN, ON) – The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) and the Town of Atikokan are making efforts to trap and relocate bears that have been a nuisance in the town area.

The MNRF has agreed to assist due to the ongoing complaints of a sow and three cubs that have been frequenting local neighbourhoods.

Several traps will be set and these organizations request assistance from members of the public with the following actions:

• Keep your dogs in your house or on a leash;
• Keep your garbage locked away until the morning of garbage collection;
• Should you come across a trap, do not interfere with the trap in any way;
• Should you see a bear in a trap, notify the OPP at 1-888-310-1122; and
• Keep away from the traps.

Members of the public are still urged to contact the MNRF bear wise program for advice on how to avoid contact with bears.
