LETTER: Yes to event centre and downtown location

To the editor:?

As a candidate running in the Red River Ward, I thought I would weigh in on the whole idea of a plebiscite regarding the event centre.

First, let it be known that I do support having the event centre and in the downtown core as long as the provincial and federal governments are also at the table.

I have lived in Guelph and worked in London, where in both cases these cities built event centres in their downtown cores and the centres transformed the downtowns to be more active, safe and clean and it was great for the local economies.

As for a plebiscite, I do not support this idea.

What would happen if the citizens of Thunder Bay vote in favour of the event centre and the two upper levels of government do not come onboard?

The City of Thunder Bay would be bound to still build the centre, all at our cost.

We elect our councillors and mayor to make these decisions.

They have all of the information from the professionals and consultants.

If we as citizens do not agree with their decision making abilities, we have the opportunity in October to change who should be making these decisions.

David George Noonan,
Red River Ward candidate
