LETTER: Will the mayor stand up against Energy East pipeline?

On April 9, I attended a presentation organized by The Council of Canadians regarding Energy East's plan to have their pipeline run through our region, our lakes and our rivers.

On April 9, I attended a presentation organized by The Council of Canadians regarding Energy East's plan to have their pipeline run through our region, our lakes and our rivers.

I am very concerned about the risks this project would entail for our health and our environment.

Mayor?Keith Hobbs, you must have heard about the spill that happened in Minnesota  a couple of years ago, about the chemicals that are mixed with the bitumen, about the fact that none of this oil is for canadians, about the devastation created by the tar sands' exploitation as well as the unprecedent use of water, and clean water being becoming such a precious resource.

You also must be aware that climate change becoming more and more a visible reality, citizens and many politicians also, all over the world, are calling and are acting for gradual elimination of reliance on fossil fuels. The global movement, and the only one that can possibly help our specie to survive, is the movement toward renewable energy.

For these reasons, I urge you, as a leader, to unite with the mayors of the other towns that are on the proposed route of Energy East's pipeline to clearly refuse this insanity. Victories have been won against pipeline plans in other regions.

A lawsuit with very good chances of winning is being held. We cannot accept such dangerous chemicals to travel through our lakes and rivers, it would be unacceptable, and if anything happened you would be held responsible.

I would very much like to hear your views on this subject, and look forward to reading the actions that you plan on taking to assure our and our environment's safety.

Catherine Courtine-Sajna,
Thunder?Bay
