LETTER: Event centre not needed, council being led by management down the wrong path

To the editor:

The more I read, about the proposed event centre, the more confused I become. First, it was an events center arena, for which the senior levels of government nixed for funding.

Then much to most people's embarrassment, the city renamed the same project a multiplex, which must have a hockey rink.

I find this simply deceitful, and think the people of our city are much above such attempted sleight of hand.

I  don't want to be associated with this types of people, which make me believe they would not be above applying the same nonsense to local taxpayers.

I also noticet he project is now back to being  n Events Centre. It is well known that the city's own executive summary nixes the project from a required now point of view.

The BMA annual report places us in the lowest grouping of household incomes in Ontario, and simultaneously in the highest-taxed grouping, CBC nationally reported that research shows building stadiums and arenas have little economic benefit for cities.

KGS Group states the Fort William Gardens is structurally adequate in their report dated Sept.11, 201

Then we have the ad from Lakehead University advertising, accommodations June through August, year-round conference facilities and services, more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space, with on-site catering. This blows big holes in the need for a larger convention facility.

With the emphasis city management has stressed regarding a must-have facility leaves to me, little doubt this whole project is just a dressed up unrequired hockey rink city management is derermined to build.

I also fail to understand, what in my thinking is a puppet like gang called our city council, doing to ward off these oppressive taxpayers to pay unrequired developement notions, which is what elected persons are there for.

If city management has a plan to use taxpayers money on proven and projected losers, are they blind to have let our roads deteriate to such a terible state? Why isn't council directing city management? Instead, as I see it, city council is being led by city management. That's pure nonsense.
