LETTER: Honest campaigning a must this campaign

To the editor,

As a new politician, one of the things that has most saddened me is the cynicism that lots of folks express about politics.

People are discouraged, and it's obvious. With a lengthy election campaign, we are knocking on doors more and more, and the message I want to bring is that change is possible. But it starts with honesty. And let me tell you, when I see  false promises that are purposely misleading, it makes me mad, not only because of the  intentional deception, but because it serves as one more reason why people say they've  lost faith in politics and politicians.

Case in point. Tom Mulcair is promising, among other things, that "an NDP government would reinstate a federal minimum wage and increase it to $15 by the end of its first term in office”

What he's talking about is a $15 dollar minimum wage for employees working in federally regulated industries -- a pledge that would not apply to 99 per cent of workers who earn minimum wage.

Neither the Conservatives nor the NDP have the courage to do what Justin Trudeau would: impose higher taxes on the wealthiest Canadians to pay for tax cuts for the middle class.

I’m proud to have a leader like Justin Trudeau who tells it likes it is. Honesty is the only way we're going to move forward as a community, and as country.

Patty Hajdu,
Liberal Candidate Thunder Bay-Superior North
