LETTER: Severed Trans-Canada should serve as wake-up call

The issue of "what if something happens to the Nipigon bridge" has been ignored by every government at both levels for the past 50 years or more. There is no other route to use as an alternative short of going through the States.

The issue of "what if something happens to the Nipigon bridge" has been ignored by every government at both levels for the past 50 years or more.

There is no other route to use as an alternative short of going through the States. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for the nation's politicians, but I doubt it.

They aren't blessed with foresight in this country. What's needed is a new route, not just a new bridge. There has to be an alternate road that will push north from Nipigon then eastward to link with Highway 11.

Aside from creating much needed jobs in the north and opening more area to tourism and recreation, it would also reduce the national security risks when the only road across Canada cannot be accessed by military or emergency vehicles.

Until now, the risks haven't been obvious, mostly because of good luck rather than good management. Is there any chance now that the issue will finally get some top-level chatter?
