LETTER: Assistance is very much appreciated

I have been collecting tabs from aluminum cans for a friend to take to the Shriners Hospital.  They have to make numerous trips with their son for follow-up appointments for a situation he’s had since birth.

Word of mouth got around about my doing this and many folks began putting aside their tabs for me.  One of those folks was Larry who has been collecting for me for a long time.  In passing he told a teacher at the Dennis Cromarty High School and he took on collecting right after their conversation.

This teacher, Scott Vis, called to ask if I could stop by and pick up some tabs. He had teachers in the school along with students drop off their tabs to him and he consolidated everything for me.

I predicted in my mind that there likely would be a few bags worth and was not at all prepared for what awaited me. The time that we agreed on for the pickup occurred during a teaching period but he stopped for a few minutes to gather the tabs.

There were the bags of tabs I had thought he’d have but along with those there was a box that measured 10” X 13” X 12” and it was absolutely full. It weighed 24 pounds.  I was thrilled and know that the family I take them to would be as well.  If I had any scientific traits I’d calculate there would be at least 250,000 tabs in that box!

On top of having that lovely surprise he asked Kenneth Kakekagumick, a student in his class to assist me in carrying the box to my car.  What a fine young man he was.  He is from Sandy Lake in Grade 12 and wanting to get the best education he can to better himself.  He was so personable to talk to and I thanked him for his time and wished him good luck in his future.

Scott also told me that another student, Mason Nayotchekeesic did so much for this project so we owe him a huge thank you as well but thanks to Larry, a great job Scott and my appreciation to all the contributors at Dennis Cromarty High School ~ very proud of you all.
