Trevor Bonot made sure early they were going to be taking the big prize in one of Thunder Bay’s most lucrative curling events.
Bonot made a quiet weight chip with the last rock in the fourth end to seal a 5-1 victory over Bryan Burgess in the championship final of the Courtesy Freight Northern Ontario Superspiel at the Port Arthur Curling Club on Sunday.
That shot ended the game, as the Bonot team collected their $1,500 winner’s cheque in addition to $400 for their round robin wins, and his first Superspiel title.
The title gives Bonot early season confidence and bragging rights.
“This was an all local field so moving ahead into playdowns it’s good to know we can play with them and compete against all of the best guys in town,” Bonot said.
Bonot reached the finals with a 4-3 semi-final victory over Gary Weiss earlier Sunday.
Burgess, who collected $1,300 on the weekend, defeated Al Hackner by a score of 7-5 in their semi-final duel.
