A four-goal second period propelled the Fort Frances Lakers to victory on SIJHL opening night.
Miles Nolan, Colton Spicer, Mason Meyer and Dylan Kooner all scored in the middle frame to lead the host Lakers to a 5-3 win over the Thunder Bay North Stars.
Thunder Bay’s Matthias Gardiman opened the scoring midway through the first, the lone goal of the period.
Brandon Wolframe added a pair of goals for the North Stars (0-1-0). Meyer’s second of the night, a power play marker at the 14:02 mark of the third, wrapped up the scoring for the Lakers, who out-shot Thunder Bay 34-32.
Devin Tappenden earned the win in net. Eric Mann, who tried out for the Lakehead Thunderwolves, took the loss at Ice For Kids Arena.
In other opening night action, Matt Houston scored with seven seconds to go in the second, completing the Dryden Ice Dogs complete a four-goal comeback and score a 4-3 win over the host English River Miners.
All four Dryden’s goals came within a six-minute span, after Layne Anderson’s power-play goal lifted the Miners to a 3-0 advantage.
