Men's team ranked CIS #6 this week

October 22, 2014 — Thunder Bay, Ont. Lakehead's cross country runners are fit, limber, and ready to let loose at the OUA Championships this weekend being hosted by Queen's University in Kingston.

The races are set to begin on Saturday morning at 11am.

The men's team, led by junior Kevin Tree, is ranked sixth in the CIS, and fourth among OUA competitors, with Guelph, McMaster and Windsor ranked ahead of Lakehead as of Tuesday this week. Tree won the Queen's open 11 days ago on the same course that will be run on Saturday. Lakehead finished in third place behind McMaster on Oct. 11, but has their aim squarely on the Windsor Lancers this weekend.

Lakehead's best ever finish at OUA's is fifth, a mark they set 2 seasons ago, and narrowly missed last season. By all accounts this time around, a podium finish is within their grasp.

"We know we need to do," mentioned sophomore Dylan Brown, of Newmarket, Ontario on Tuesday. "All that's left is to go do it."

Thunder Bay's Dominique Aulagnon, Mason Quarrell and Kenny Groop, along with Connor McGuire (Summerside, PEI),  and Tyler White (Aurora, Ont.) round out the men's contingent.

The women's side will be sending four runners, one short of the required team complement due to an injury to Brittany Rebelo. Sophomore Mary Strain, of Fort Frances, has had a breakout year that's featured success on both sides of the border, including a 15th place finish at the prestigious Roy Griak in Minneapolis.

"I've set pretty high goals set for myself at OUA's," Strain said in a recent interview.

Says coach Kip Sigsworth, "The work is done and now it is go time. Everyone is healthy so there are no excuses. The goal is to go out, run hard and execute the game plan. If each athlete does that the results will take care of themselves.  We are ready to roll so it should be fun."
