Jon Kreiner is staying put for at least another five years.

The Lakehead Thundewolves women’s basketball coach inked a five-year deal to remain with the team, months after leading the Wolves to the OUA semifinal.

Men’s coach Manny Furtado was also extended on Thursday, signing a two-year deal.

"I'm thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to continue my work with the Thunderwolves and the community of Thunder Bay," said Kreiner, who joined the team in 2003, in a release.

"The past 12 years have been a great experience. We've steadily grown women's basketball in the Thunder Bay region at all levels. I look forward to building on last season and working with our young squad to grow into a national calibre team."

Athletic director Tom Warden said it was an easy decision to make the offer.

"Jon's done a great job recruiting, and is moving the women's basketball program in the right direction," says Warden. "We've been pleased with his progress and look forward to it continuing though 2020."

Kreiner has an overall 181-223 record, but is coming off a 25-9 campaign.

Furtado, on the other hand, is entering just his second season with the Thunderwolves program, having taken over from long-time coach Scott Morrison last summer.

Furtado coached his squad to a 19-12 overall record and took the team to the second round of the OUA playoffs.

I am very thankful and‎ appreciative for the opportunity that Lakehead University and Tom Warden have given me," Furtado said. "Last year was a big learning experience for myself and I look forward to preparing our men's program for the challenge of getting Lakehead back to national contention."

Warden said the former Carleton Ravens assistant proved his worth in Year 1.

“With 12 months under his belt in Thunder Bay, he's had a chance to get his feet wet, and he's earned this next opportunity," Warden said.

"This contract represents our commitment to him, and his commitment to us and our goal, to have the men's basketball program be one of the best in the country."

Both teams open regular-season play on Nov. 6 at home against Guelph.
