THUNDER BAY -- It appears the Thunder Bay Border Cats are here for the long term.

The Northwoods League team on Thursday announced it has reached a five-year lease agreement with the city to remain at Port Arthur Stadium through the 2020 season.

Team president Kyle Smith, in a release issued by the Border Cats, said it’s a show of faith that the new owners want to keep the team in Thunder Bay.

“This lease is another step in proving the commitment of continuing Northwoods League baseball in Thunder Bay for years to come,” Smith said.

“We couldn’t be more excited to enter into this agreement of the City of Thunder Bay and show how much we believe in the citizens and the business community of the city. We would also like to thank city administration who have been nothing short of amazing in working to get this lease in place.”

Border Cats general manager Dan Grant, a homegrown talent who played for the team in its inaugural 2003 campaign, said it’s a relief to get a deal done.

“Being born and raised in Thunder Bay and having the fortunate opportunity to play for the team, this is an important moment to ensure the Border Cats can make an impact in the community in the years to come. It’s our town, our team,” Grant said.

Terms of the deal were not made public.

The team's new ownership group took over the team this past winter, buying out long-time owner Brad Jorgenson.

The Cats are scheduled to open the 2016 season on May 31 when they host Mankato at Port Arthur Stadium.
