Lakehead Wrestling to host regional development centre

June 30, 2016 — Thunder Bay, Ont. Lakehead University's varsity wrestling program, along with the Lakehead Wrestling Club have partnered with Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association (OAWA) to become one of four Regional Development Centres in the province.

This program, in a decision supported by Wrestling Canada, will follow the Ontario High Performance (OHP) model, with other centres established in Windsor, Kingston and Sudbury.

“This is a great opportunity for wrestling here in Northwestern Ontario and across the province.," says Lakehead coach Francis Clayton "Ontario Wrestling is doing a good job fostering the sport in all regions. Becoming one of the Development Centres is a result of the hard work our coaches and athletes have put in over the past two to three decades.”

In addition to official status, Lakehead Wrestling was also presented with a brand new wrestling mat, valued at over $10,000. Program details are outlined below.

Region Responsibilities:
• Two year commitment to run program
• Recruit minimum 30 participants
• Arrange 4 Regional clinics/camps per year (Summer, Autumn, December and Spring Break).

Purpose of clinics:
• Promote wrestling in Northwestern Ontario
• Identify athletes for Ontario High Performance Program/Canada Games Programs.
• Coordinate participation of identified athletes in central OHP sessions.
