THUNDER BAY -- Of all the local summer street festivals, the one held in the South Core on Saturday felt the most like a strolling tour of neighbourhood businesses.

Downtown Fort William has natural crannies for artists and performers through its streets and alleys.

For many of the 5,000 people, the festival was an opportunity to revisit a commercial district that has been shaken and stirred over the last few years.

"We just want people to come and revisit, re-establish themselves with the area," said Fort William District BIA coordinator Ellen Leiterman.

"People tend to forget there are a number of businesses in this area as well as eateries and whatnot. Just come and join in and revisit those places again and just get in with the festival idea, get in and have some fun."

The layout of the eighth annual event snaked past 50 businesses from the intersection at Victoria Ave. and May St. through McKellar, Justice and Brodie Streets. The ride ended on Archibald St. where human hamster balls, clown shenanigans, pony rides and bouncy castles turned the commercial event into a wholesome family outing.

"We had an excellent turnout today and I think it's all part and parcel to do with the weather, as well as a number of events that are happening here," Leiterman said.
