Thunder Bay will be lit up tonight for Paralympics

THUNDER BAY – There will be a different look to the Boulevard Lake Dam and Thunder Bay City Hall on Tuesday night.

At sunset, both buildings will be lit up as part of a nationwide celebration to mark 50 days until the start of the Paralympic Games in Paris.

"We are thrilled to kick off the 50-day countdown to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games by illuminating iconic landmarks across Canada," said Karen O'Neill, CEO, Canadian Paralympic Committee, in a prepared statement.

"This visual display of support is a powerful reminder of the unity and pride that defines our nation as well as showcases how we as Canadians truly value inclusion in sport. In the coming weeks, we look forward to revealing more new ways Canadians can get involved and support the nation's Para athletes in what is going to be a historic Paralympic Games this summer."

The illuminations will be in one of three colours, each of which has a different meaning.

The red lights signify national pride, the violet lights are the colour commonly associated with disability and inclusivity, while the gold lights represent strength and ambitions.

"As a Paralympian, seeing the country rally behind us with such a vibrant display of support is incredibly motivating, and makes me even more proud to represent Canada," said Para canoe athlete Brianna Hennessy in a prepared statement.

"I can't wait for everyone to find out some of the other unique ways they can be a part of the journey to Paris with us this summer. We are ready to shine brighter than ever."

The 2024 Paralympic Games get underway on Aug. 28 and wrap up on Sept. 8.
