THUNDER BAY — Mount Baldy had its last day of skiing for this season on Saturday.
“We told everyone last weekend was going to be the last day on Sunday. I figured we'd do one more dance out here at Mount Baldy,” said Daniel Kardas, owner of Mount Baldy.
Kardas said it was a relatively cold week, and the conditions are still great.
“Still beautiful white, we don't really have many patches on the hill. All the runs are open except for one. People are enjoying it. This late snow this past season has been great and probably one of our longest seasons in a long time,” he said.
Kardas said they began making snow in the beginning of November, and in mid-April the hills are still in great condition.
“Today is our last dance of the season, you know, and that's why I'm smiling so much because it's a long year.”
Many people don’t like getting snow later in the winter season, Kardas said, but skiers and snowboarders do.
“When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, this is what we're looking for. If we keep the season going, people are enjoying that transition time this time of season, if it's melting, there's nothing much to do out there.
“I'm never going to say no to something like this. This has been a great season for Mount Baldy. It’s been a long time coming. It's been a couple hard years when it comes to snow and, let's keep her coming. Hopefully next season is even better.
“I just want to thank all the customers and all the support in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas. We wouldn't do it without them. We have big plans again for next season and lots of surprises coming ahead,” he said.
