Dougall Media, Thunder Bay's only locally owned broadcast/multimedia company, has an exciting one-year (52-week) paid internship on our website team as an Indigenous Reporter Intern. This opportunity is aimed at fostering the inclusion of Indigenous voices in Northwestern Ontario.
The reporter-intern must participate in on-the-job training. With mentorship from the editorial team and senior reporters, the intern will be expected to generate story ideas for content on TBnewswatch, NWOnewswatch, and SNnewswatch. Story ideas will be pitched to the Editor and followed up on as needed. The reporter-intern is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships throughout the coverage area, as well as performing fact-checking duties on their stories and posting completed stories and photos to the appropriate website(s), while adhering to all journalistic ethics and standards.
Applicants must live in Northwestern Ontario, self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, Métis) peoples of Canada and be new to the field of journalism (un/under-employed or making a career transition)
Responsibilities include:
• Participate in on-the-job training, health and safety (H&S) training, and new hire orientation
• Collect, verify and analyze newsworthy information
• Write and deliver news stories with the reader’s perspective in mind
• Publish and schedule stories across the Newswatch websites
• Receive assignments, investigate news leads and tips
• Contact, interview and conduct research and fact check sources for stories
• Co-operate and collaborate with other reporters, including those in other departments, along with the managing editor and news director
• Other duties as assigned
Requirements for this position:
• Live in Northwestern Ontario
• Superior language, writing and editing skills
• Interest in learning the skills and craft of journalism
• Flexibility to work a variety of different shift schedules, including nights and weekends
• A willingness to travel
• A valid Ontario driver’s license
• The ability to meet tight deadlines
