Burlington Fire Department's 5 Winter Safety Tips

We are reminding residents to use extreme caution around water and ice this winter.

Here are our top five safety tips to keep in mind if you’re heading outdoors:

1) Avoid walking on ice, especially alone or at night. Remember if in doubt, don’t go out!

2) Keep a safe distance away from bodies of water including streams, stormwater ponds and shorelines. In search of ice-skating spots? Stick to official outdoor rinks.

3) Wear a lifejacket or personal floatation device over winter clothing and carry a personal safety kit with you when outside exploring near waterways.

4) Never underestimate ice thickness and water temperature. Ice should be clear and a minimum of 10 centimeters or thicker before attempting to walk on. You may have less than a minute to get your breathing under control and you must move quickly to get yourself out before hypothermia sets in.

5) If your pet or someone you’re with falls through, do not go after them. Instead, immediately. Call 9-1-1 remain safely on land and keep your eyes on the victim(s). Keep in mind, there are life rings along Burlington's promenade, beach and pier for use during emergencies.
