The Opportunity

Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Facilities, the Pool Operator is responsible for performing custodial functions, building and equipment maintenance and minor repair, pool and splash pad maintenance, responding to enquiries and concerns, assisting with arena operations, opening and closing functions, ensuring the facility is clean and safe for users, and for providing exceptional customer service related to the pool facility. The main duties and responsibilities of the position are in the areas of custodial functions, equipment and facility maintenance, supplies inventory, and facility security.

What You Will Do

• Perform custodial duties which include sweeping; vacuuming; cleaning offices, meeting rooms, washrooms, change rooms, and common areas; interior and exterior window washing.

• Collect garbage and perform recycling duties which include collecting, sorting and removal, perform walkway sweeping, snow removal from entrances and sanding/salting areas as required.

• Prepare meeting rooms for various functions, which include cleaning and set-up of observation/training room.

• Assist in proper pool maintenance which includes complete water quality and pH balance testing; maintaining, recording, and perform backwashes on filtration systems as required; add chemicals to pool, keep records of pool and mechanical system maintenance, clean out strainer baskets

• Assist in minor HVAC maintenance; replace filters, change the heating system based on seasonal requirements; assist trades people (e.g., electrician, plumber, HVAC technician, etc.) as required. Conduct weekly maintenance on competitive lane timer.

• Work with Supervisor to review and update operational procedures and/or checklists for equipment and/or the facility; make recommendations for repairs and/or capital improvements.

• Perform minor facility and equipment maintenance and repair such as light bulb / tube replacement, pump replacement, grease fittings as required.

• Perform minor building maintenance which includes painting, drywall, mechanical, plumbing, minor electrical and other repairs, as required.

Skills and Experience

• Working knowledge of pool maintenance and equipment operation, Public Pools Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, departmental policies and procedures, and chemical water treatment testing. Experience in painting, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, and structural repairs.

• Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management, and public relations skills, together with the ability to use tact and discretion and to deal courteously and effectively with the public and fellow staff members.

• Ability to multi-task, cope with interruptions and work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines, exercise discretion and good judgment. Possess initiative and personal integrity.

• Physically capable of performing the required functions of the position (e.g., standing, walking, skating, lifting, pushing, pulling), operating cleaning equipment, working in an arena (cold) and pool (warm) environment with water hazard, and wearing the applicable personal protective equipment. Willing and available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, and scheduled stand-by.

• Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office applications and office equipment.

• Knowledge of aquatic sports an asset.

Qualifications

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Pool Operator.
• Two (2) years of pool operation experience.
• Valid Class “G” driver’s license and current Driver’s Abstract with results satisfactory to the Employer. Ability and willingness to travel within the community as required.
• Possess a current Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) with results satisfactory to the employer, and a valid standard first aid & CPR/AED Level C certification.

Other Important Information

Normal hours of work are forty (40) hours per week. The pay range is $63,086.40 to $76,648.00 per year.
