Now that the school year has finished, many families will be looking forward to the precious moments of summer that might include taking a trip, playing in a soccer league, going fishing, attending a family event or enjoying a favourite lake, pool or swimming hole.

Unfortunately, for too many Canadian families these kinds of moments are simply out of reach.

In fact, many families struggle to ensure that their children have access to child care, nutritious food and opportunities that will ensure their success.

That is why I am so proud of our government’s recent announcement introducing the new Canada Child Benefit.

This tax-free, generous benefit will provide money to families who need it the most and help make Canada stronger, safer and more inclusive.

In fact, the Canada Child Benefit will see nine out of ten families receiving benefits as soon as later this month. And the best part is, this benefit will help elevate hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty.

As a low-income single parent when I was first separated from father of my two under six years of age children, I was not a high earner even with the child support I received.

But I still considered myself fortunate because I had a steady and stable job, access to benefits and could also access credit when necessary. As a result, my boys were well housed and fed and were able to take part in some recreational activities.

Many families struggle with low income and are forced to make tough sacrifices that limit choices and opportunities for their children. This is why the Canada Child Care Benefit is so important.

The benefit will ensure that families get the hand they need to ensure the successful development of their children; something that will benefit all of us. Children who thrive socially and academically give back tremendously to their communities; creating safe, happy and prosperous communities.

I am very happy to have the opportunity as your MP to  champion strong and fair programs like the Canada Child Benefit that will not only help families but contribute to a stronger Canada.

This kind of compassionate, smart and fair policy is exactly why I entered politics; to ensure that we move together towards a brighter future and that no one is left behind.

Have a great July and be sure to say hello as our paths cross in our great riding of Thunder Bay Superior North.

Your MP,
Patty Hajdu
