To the editor:

In response to the story “Four-year-old dies,” did you ever wonder or ask why this little girl was shipped off to Winnipeg?

Was this tragic accident a survivable one if our own new multi-million dollar and supposedly modern hospital had done something?

What of the next child or adult who receives life-threatening injuries. Is their only hope to survive the trip to Winnipeg?

I guess I am a little upset. I mean I understand that some traumatic injuries require certain expertise, but I cannot believe that our own new hospital and its highly educated staff couldn’t have done something in this particular incident and saved this little girl’s life.

Her injuries were severe but did she really need to die from them if treated immediately?
We focus so much on the accident itself (news articles), without really looking at the resources or possible lack of in our own hospital and the reasons why they failed this little girl.

Are we, the citizens of Thunder Bay, blindly and falsely assuming they are there, counting on them when we really need them only to find out in the worst possible scenario that they actually don’t exist?

If Thunder Bay doesn’t have the doctors with the knowledge to deal with traumatic injuries, shouldn’t the public know of our limited capabilities in hopes of obtaining doctors who can do something for the next “tragic accident.”

Our hospital seems to be immune to the scrutiny and questions the public would demand that say a police officer would face when things don’t go right.

That’s unfortunate and I am sure I am not the only one in Thunder Bay wondering why this incident turned out the way it did. My personal view is one of a needless death.

Dave Davies,
Thunder Bay
