The Canada Border Services Agency seized 147 prohibited and undeclared weapons from a traveler returning to Canada via the Pigeon River border crossing last month.

Details of the November 17 incident were released by the CBSA today.

The agency says the weapons were discovered in a vehicle after the 61-year-old Thunder Bay-area man was referred for a secondary examination.

That's when officers discovered boxes of prohibited and undeclared knives in the vehicle's trunk.

The cache included 19 prohibited brass knuckle lives and 128 undeclared knives.

The traveller was arrested, and the vehicle and weapons were seized. According to the CBSA, the individual paid a penalty of $9,500 for the return of the vehicle, and $300 for the release of the undeclared knives.

The CBSA district director for northwestern Ontario, Tuula Schuler, said "Weapons are high-risk commodities and their interdiction is a CBSA enforcement priority."

Charges are pending in relation to the seizure of the prohibited weapons, with a court date set for December 22.
