26th annual Run for the Cure supports those affected by breast cancer

Organizers were thrilled with how many people came to show their support, even with COVID still lingering

THUNDER BAY – The 26th annual CIBC Run for the Cure was held on Sunday to support those who are affected by breast cancer and who may be going through breast cancer treatment.

October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Malissa Irvine, co-director for the CIBC Run for the Cure says that couldn't be happier with the turnout.

“Over 250 have registered for it which is a great comeback here after COVID,” she said. “So far, over $31,000 has been raised and it’s still growing.”

Irvine says that they were not sure what to expect with COVID still lingering, but her and other organizers were thrilled with how many people came to show their support.

“We don't really have a goal, just anything we raise is better than what we didn't have yesterday,” she said. It brings awareness to people, and it helps show everyone that everyone is affected by [breast cancer], One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.”

Michelle Blackburn, a 12-year cancer survivor, says that events like these are incredibly important for survivors like her and their families.

“To see people come together again, and how many people are committed to making a difference in the fight against breast cancer is so important,” she said.

“There are going to be bad days, but there are also going to be really good days like today. Just, don't stop believing and keep going and if you need help, reach out, reach out to the Canadian Cancer Society, reach out to another survivor. There are people, who are out there, who want to support you.”
