63-year-old man attacked, Ontario’s SIU now investigating aggravated assault

THUNDER BAY -- One man is in the hospital, and another is in custody following an aggravated assault that now has the attention of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials have confirmed that a 29-year-old was arrested after an alleged break and enter into a John Street home on Jan. 3.

Police say just before 1 p.m., a suspicious man was observed on the property of a 63-year-old man who worked at a nearby business. The homeowner went home from his business to check on the situation.

A plain clothed officer also happened to be in the area at the time, and staff of the nearby business alerted the officer to the situation.

Officers went to the home to investigate and discovered the 63-year-old man being assaulted outside the home. The officers arrested a 29 year old male after a struggle.

The 63-year-old victim of the assault was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the assault.

Tyson Stanley Spence, 29, has been charged with aggravated assault, resist arrest, break and enter and breach of probation. The man has been remanded into custody with a Jan. 8 court date.

The Special Investigation Unit has invoked their mandate to investigate injuries sustained by the accused in this incident.
