THUNDER BAY — A temperature record that had stood for seven decades was obliterated in Thunder Bay on Monday afternoon.
Environment Canada recorded a temperature of 29.8 C (updated by EC as of Tuesday afternoon) at the airport, destroying the previous high-temperature mark for Oct. 2, which was set in 1953 at 27.2 C.
Prospects look good for a second consecutive record to be established on Tuesday, when the temperature is expected to peak at about 27 C.
The existing record of 25.6 C for Oct. 3 was set in 1956.
"We're seeing a nice, warm air mass for the next couple of days here. There's a warm front to the north, there's a cold front to the west, so we're just sitting nicely in this pocket of warm weather," meteorologist Ray Houle had noted earlier Monday.
But temperatures are forecast to drop sharply by the end of the week, with Friday's predicted high of 9 C being four degrees below normal for this time of year.
