A courier van crashed into the Gravel River (3 Photos)

Emergency responders were called to a water rescue incident.

GRAVEL RIVER, Ont. — A driver for a courier service is said to have escaped injury when his delivery van left Highway 17 and crashed into a river on the north shore of Lake Superior.

The incident occurred Monday morning at Gravel River, about mid-way between Schreiber and Nipigon.

The Schreiber, Nipigon and Terrace Bay fire departments as well as Superior North EMS and the OPP all responded.

OPP have not released details about the incident, however Schreiber Fire posted a message that indicated emergency responders had to perform a water rescue.

Photos showed the van in the middle of the river, with the water level up to its windows.

An employee of the courier company in Thunder Bay said the driver was initially taken to Nipigon hospital, but suffered no injuries as a result of the collision.

The vehicle was pulled out of the river by a towing company.
