THUNDER BAY — A new French-language public school will begin operation in Thunder Bay next year.

It's expected to be located in the former Edgewater Park public school on Victoria Avenue, which was closed by the Lakehead District School Board in 2020.

Classes will begin in September 2023.

The Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario will  announce details of plans for the school at an Oct. 4 news conference.

The board, which is headquartered in Sudbury, operates French-language public schools across Northern Ontario, including in Marathon, Manitouwadge and Longlac in the Northwest.

The French-language Catholic school board, Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales, has numerous schools between Marathon and Red Lake, including a high school and an elementary school in Thunder Bay.

In a statement Tuesday, the CSDC des Aurores boréales said it's proud of the work it's done over the last 25 years ensuring the viability and development of French-language education in Northwestern Ontario.

"With CSP Grand Nord de l'Ontario opening a second French elementary school in Thunder Bay, our community will benefit from more opportunities to develop the French language and experience francophone culture," the board added.
