KENORA, Ont. — The number of active COVID-19 cases in the District of Rainy River stands at 10.

The Northwestern Health Unit reported another new case Tuesday, without disclosing the specific location.

It said appropriate followup is being done with the person involved and with any identified contacts.

The NWHU also reported a new case in Rainy River District on Monday, after reporting five new cases on the weekend.

In a statement on Saturday, the health unit cautioned about the rising incidence of COVID-19 in the Town of Rainy River specifically, describing the situation as "concerning."

At the time, it said, there were "more than 10 active cases" in the community of about 800 people.

The NWHU said the cases were connected to an outbreak at a seniors' apartment building, as well as family gatherings and group activities.

"The risk of transmission of COVID-19 is higher in the Rainy River area," warned Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon.

She advised residents not to gather with people outside their households, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay at least two meters apart from anyone they don't live with.

Within the NWHU's catchment area, in addition to the 10 active cases in the District of Rainy River, as of Tuesday afternoon there were seven active cases in the Kenora region.

An additional two cases involve individuals whose home addresses are outside the NWHU catchment area.

However, during the period when they could have acquired the virus, or they could have been infectious, they were visiting in the Rainy River District.
