THUNDER BAY — The Correctional Service of Canada is investigating the circumstances of the death of an inmate from Thunder Bay at Stoney Mountain Institution in Manitoba.

CSC reported that Shane Kruchak, 50, died on Jan. 23, 2025 while in custody, less than two months after he arrived at the prison.

The cause of death and other details were not provided, as Correctional Services of Canada stated only that "As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC will review the circumstances."

It added that, as required by policy, it had notified police and the coroner.

In early December 2024, Kruchak began serving a 30-month sentence for manslaughter in the death of Brian Jacob Wyer.

Wyer, 35, succumbed in December 2021 to stab wounds suffered in an incident in the 200 block of May Street South.

Thunder Bay Police said at the time that the two men were known to each other.
