THUNDER BAY — Lappe vintage snowmobile club held its annual snowmobile show on Sunday.

The show has been running for six years, and is an opportunity for the Lappe vintage snowmobile club to get together yearly at Dawson General Store and show off machines.

“This year we've got some new classes, some newer machines are here, down to the 90s, even a few new ones that are just a few years old, and we're trying to see if we can get more competitors to come out and show off their equipment,” said Tyler Fedun, volunteer with Lappe vintage snowmobile club.

The turnout was better the expected, Fedun said.

“I would say probably about 40 machines, 40 or 45 machines. It was a good turnout, good turnout for a warm day and (we’re) thankful for no rain,” he said.

There were a couple of trophies given out at the snowmobile show.

“We’ve got different classes, with the best original, greasiest triple, best beater, and a few other ones, just to see if we can get some more competition out,” Fedun said.

Fedun said there are different ways to add ‘brownie points,' and win a trophy.

“Some are rarer than others, some are in better shape than others, some have been restored. It depends on what the machine is and what has been done to it,” he said.

Andrew Wilson was enjoying the snowmobile community at the show on Sunday.

He had a machine in the show that he built himself.

“I built it probably 15 years ago, and it's just pretty basic. It's just an engine with a propeller and four skis and it's very light and it's very fast,” he said.

The machine can go well over 100 kilometres, Wilson said, adding that it took him about six months to build.

“I came here with my son, he's seven, and we have another old machine that we brought here, so he wanted to come and show his machine off, so that's why we're here. His cousins are here, they got a whole bunch of machines too,” he said.

Wilson said he got a lot of questions about the snowmobile along with many different comments.
