The walls of Confederation college are a little more colourful these days.
On Monday the school officially unveiled its latest addition, Living in Landscape, an abstract Patrick Doyle painting donated to the school by an anonymous benefactor.
Doyle, a Thunder Bay artist set to open a show at Definitely Superior Art Gallery on July 26, said the painting, an oil on Masonite design, is a good fit for the college’s modern environment.
“There’s a lot of mosaic at the college here, the culture and the region,” Doyle said. “I’m trying to take all that in and hoping it coincides with the college.
“I’m over the top, really I am. It’s very exciting.”
Gloria Cyr, a volunteer member of the college foundation, said the school has a long history of displaying local artwork, including works Doyle’s aunt, well-known artist Sue Ross.
“Over the years we have been able to have an amazing collection of art, representing artists both here and in the region. I don’t want to use the words a civilizing factor, but I think it is,” Cyr said. “I think it’s wonderful to have, rather than bare walls, art that inspires people to appreciate the beauty of the North.
“Many of the scenes in the art depict that. The others are abstract, but it’s all a matter of appreciating the creativity of other people, local people.”
Living in Landscape is on display in the atrium in Confederation College’s Reach building.
