THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay city councillor faces a recommended penalty from the city’s integrity commissioner.
A recommendation to suspend the pay of Coun. Rajni Agarwal for 30 days for an as-yet-unknown violation of city council's code of conduct will be discussed by council next Monday.
The details of the integrity commissioner’s findings against Agarwal have not yet been released, but the recommended penalty is outlined in a draft meeting agenda published Tuesday.
A full report on the matter from the integrity commissioner is set to be released on Wednesday.
Council is not bound to follow the integrity commissioner’s recommendations.
Last year, for example, the previous term of council declined to sanction Coun. Aldo Ruberto, despite a recommendation to do so.
The firm Principles Integrity provides integrity commissioner services to the city. Representatives of the firm will be available Monday to present the report and take questions from council.
Already well-known as a realtor and land developer, Agarwal was elected for the first time in 2022 as one of the city’s five at-large councillors.
