A local educational initiative is hoping to have an alternative school in Thunder Bay by 2014.

The Northern Lights Educational Initiative is putting a prosal together for a school that would be inspired by Waldorf, the largest independent system in the world with more than 2,000 schools.

“It’s an education that’s what we could say is holistic so it really has an artistic aspect to it. It has very strong academics but it also has a practical side to it,” organizer Arlene Thorn said Sunday as dozens of children and their parents checked out an information session about the proposal .

The proposal will be presented to the Lakehead Public Schools board in September. Because the school would be publically funded, enrollment would work just like any other school. While the Waldorf program does operate all the way to grade 12, Thorn said for now they would just focus on programs until the third grade.

“We don’t feel we’re ready yet to have a full blown school,” she said. “We look forward to working with the board and seeing this school come about.”
