A travelling exhibit from the Montreal Holocaust Museum arrives April 11.

THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Museum will host an exhibit on the Holocaust.

Provided by the Montreal Holocaust Museum, "And in 1948, I came to Canada": The Holocaust in Six Dates will be on display starting next month and until the end of June.

The Montreal museum says the exhibit is aimed at raising awareness about the genocide of the Jews by presenting its history and reflecting on the impact of racism and discrimination in society.

It commemorates the victims of the Holocaust and honours the survivors who found new homes in Canada.

In partnership with Thunder Bay's Shaarey Shomayim congregation, the Thunder Bay Museum has also developed a wide range of complimentary programming while the exhibit is in the city:

  • Apr. 11 - Exhibit opening reception
  • Apr. 27 - Virtual lecture by Dr. Valerie Hébert: "Nothing is to be gained by creating an internal problem in an effort to meet an international one" - Canada's response to the Jewish refugee crisis
  • May 10 to 12 - Concert series A Song Rings Out: Lost Composers of the Holocaust.  These are chamber music concerts featuring works by Jewish composers impacted by the Holocaust, and arranged by Michelle Zapf-Belanger, section violinist with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra
  • May 19 - Lecture by Mark Scharf, the child of Holocaust survivors

Options will also be provided to local schools to participate through field trips, virtual programs and lesson plans.

Scott Bradley, executive director of the Thunder Bay Museum, says the museum applied to host the exhibit because it's important to remember issues related to oppression, genocide, and the destruction that happens during war.

"Certainly these genocidal events that sometimes happen during wars is something that we want to continue to educate about, so that no one ever forgets," Bradley said.
