THUNDER BAY – The Coats for Kids outerwear drive has collected thousands of winter coats for families in Thunder Bay during the last 18 years.
“We are thrilled with the generosity of the people in the community,” said Sarah Polowski, human rights committee chairperson with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association.
The union takes the lead on the annual coat drive campaign with the support of the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and Iron Range Bus Lines and together they are putting out a call for gently used winter gear from coats and snow pants to mitts, hats and boots.
“There is a lot of need in the city,” said Polowski, adding they will be collecting the items until Nov. 7 and then distribute them starting Nov. 16 at Victoriaville Centre.
Adult coats are also welcome donations and the coats will be given out no questions asked to anyone who would like one.
Donations can be dropped off at Catholic board schools across the city or the board office on Victoria Avenue.
Polowski, who is also a Grade 2 teacher at St. Bernard School, said it’s important students recognize the significance of the campaign.
“We are schools in the community. We are all in this together,” she said. “We like to share the gospel message. We like to share and be kind and connect with people.”
