THUNDER BAY – Starting on Monday, April 15, crews will be out for the city’s spring street sweeping program, which occurs once temperatures rise above zero.

Street sweepers focus on removing sand spread over the winter months on streets and sidewalks.  Downtown core areas, bike lanes, and arterial and collector streets are completed first before operations move on to residential areas.

In addition to tidying up local roads, street sweeping keeps lanes clear for pedestrian and cyclist safety. It makes road markings visible, reduces the risk of damage to vehicles, and keeps road sand out of rivers and lakes.

You can check where your neighbourhood falls in the street sweeping sequence this year and find progress updates online here.

Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use extra caution around street sweeping operations.

If you have questions about street sweeping in your area, contact dispatch at 807-625-2195.
